Not Just an Airport, A Part of History

As you fly into Myrtle Beach for your vacation, take a look out your window at the history below. You are not just looking at open fields and black top runways, you are looking at a World War II training base for the 323rd and 391st bombardment group and 404th fighter-bomber group.

The current Myrtle Beach International Airport sits on the land formerly occupied by the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. The base was built in 1940 as a training facility and for coastal patrols durning WWII. The base was later a front-line facility during the Cold War, Vietnam War and Persian Gulf War in 1990. The Myrtle Beach golf course Whispering Pines was the "on-base" USAF golf course where many service men and women learned the game and spent their free time. The base closed in 1993 and is now the home of our current airport. Much of the surrounding land has been and will be developed into condo rental communities, office complexes and towncenters. Regardless of the structures that will someday cover the old Air Force base, it is important to always remember the many men and women who called the base their home while in defense of our country. The look of the land may change, but their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
